NZ Hat & Hair Art Awards 2012 Categories
Are you ready to enter? Your challenge is to design and create an outstanding artwork. Your design must be entered into one of the following categories:
Maori Legends and Myths
In the beginning there was no sky, no sea, no earth and no Gods. There was only darkness, only Te Kore, the Nothingness.. From this nothingness, the primal parents of the Māori came, Papatuanuku, the Earth mother, and Ranginui, the Sky father. Discover the Maori legends and discover your inspiration to create a work of art reflecting NZ’s cultural roots.
Unexplained Mysteries
Paranormal phenomena of the Bermuda Triangle, Big Foot (Yeti), Loch Ness Monster, UFO, Aliens, Ghosts, spirits and psychics, Vampires. Take a journey into the intrigue and mystery of the X-files.
The key is to scare or intrigue, it’s up to you.
Carnival Magic
Imagine Fairgrounds, Mardi gras, Carnevale di Venezia or the colourful world of the mystical and magical circus full of masterful illusions. Explore the black magic witches or the fantasy of fairies and elves.
The key is to dazzle and amaze us with your brand of magic
Mythology of the Ancient World
Civilization says a lot about its people: explore the history of the world mythology and religion from the fascinating legends and myths of the Greeks to the warrior gods in Norse mythology, or a culture where goddesses are associated with earth, motherhood, love, and the household or in other cultures, goddesses also rule over war, death, and destruction as well as healing.
Prizes
Supreme Awards - valued over $2000* each, to the overall winning Hat Art Design and Hair Art Design.
Category Awards - valued over $500 each, to the best hat entry and the best hair entry in each category.
Finalists Awards - over all categories - awarded at the judge's discretion, value to be advised
Total prizes valued over $15,000 will be awarded.

Entry Forms
Entry forms may be downloaded by clicking here. If you require a hard copy please contact NZ Hat & Hair Art Awards, Majestic Theatre Building, 113 Stafford St, Timaru or phone/txt Event Manager Denise Whyte on 027 433 1929.
Entry fee of $40.00 per entry must accompany each entry form. Cheques payable to: New Zealand Hat and Hair Awards Incorporated. Entries close 31st March 2012. Send completed entries to: NZ Hat &Hair Awards, Majestic Theatre Building, 113 Stafford St. Timaru. All entries will be acknowledged and further details sent after closing date.
Multiple or Joint entries are acceptable, but each entry must be accompanied by an entry form and fee and attributed to a designer.
Please also supply a paragraph covering what inspired your entry that could be used in programmes, judge's info, etc.
Entry Submission/Return (Transport of Entry form)
All packaging and transportation costs of hat or hair art entries are the responsibility of the entrant. Entrants must pay freight costs both ways, and supply instructions on the Hat/Hair Art Transport of Entry form.
Entries must be delivered to: NZ Hat & Hair Art Awards, Majestic Theatre building 113 Stafford St, Timaru no later than Monday 11th April 2012. Late entries will not be accepted.
Hat Art entries must be submitted in a suitable case or box with the Transport of Entry form.
Boxes must have a return address clearly marked.
A sketch, photographs, DVD or instructions on how the hat is to be worn and how to put it on MUST be included.
New Zealand Hat and Hair Awards Incorporated take no responsibility for any unlabelled work.
Design Notes - Hair
Designs do not have to be practical or functional.
Entries may contain or feature any materials or products, Hair art design must comprise 50% hair, which may include non-human, synthetic or any other material to represent hair.
Hair art design can be premade and attached on the day, must be well balanced and fully self-supported. It must sit firmly on the model’s head and be capable of parading during judging and at the awards show. For the models comfort must be able to be removed from the head between judging and the Awards show if required.
Hair art entrants will supply a garment to complement their hair art design but please note, judging of entries will focus 80% on the hair art design and 20% on overall concept. Be aware that the model may have to safely negotiate 45° ramps on entry and exit of catwalk.
OPTION 1
Designers may submit their Hair art entry, inclusive of garments, accessories and description of makeup etc, no later than Friday 6th April 2012, to be fitted for a house model to wear. A team will be available to re-create your entry for the Awards show.
OPTION 2
Designers may use their own model that will be required for rehearsals Thursday evening 26th April and Friday evening the 27th April.
Models unable to attend rehearsals must be available on Saturday 28th April from 9.00am to 10.30am backstage at the Timaru Theatre Royal to work with the Awards show director and choreographer.
Preparation, Photography and Judging
Preparation facilities, incl mirrors, power points and tables, will be available from 9.00am on Saturday the 28th April at the Scottish Hall, Barnard St, Timaru, (opp the rear entrance to the Theatre Royal).
Photography of all Hair Art models will commence from mid-day.
Preliminary judging will commence at 1pm at the Scottish hall. All models will parade and final judging will be incorporated along with Hat Art entries in the Rehearsal Performance beginning at 2.30pm Saturday the 28th April at the Theatre Royal.

Design Notes - Hats
Designs do not have to be practical or functional.
Hats must be well balanced and fully self-supporting. It must sit firmly on the model’s head and be capable of parading during judging and at the awards show.
Hats must be original creations, they cannot be the decoration of an existing hat, but they can be adapted from other items.
For Hat Art entries, the organisers will provide all models, dressed identically to emphasis the hat.
Hats will be exhibited in a fully choreographed performance. Please ensure:
- Hat is of sound construction
- Hat is fitted and well balanced; a chin strap may be used.
- Hat is safe to wear, no sharp edges
- Hat should not be excessively heavy. Models must be able to parade hat unsupported for periods of 20mins without risk of injury.
- Hat should not exceed 1.5m in height or width.
- Be aware that model may have to safely negotiate 45° ramps on entry and exit of catwalk.
- Hot glue, tape or staples are not to be relied on to hold materials together.
- Perishable materials are not permitted.
- There must be a fabric label inside your entry, showing your name, address, section entered and the title of your Hat Art entry
NZ Hat & Hair Awards take no responsibility for unlabelled entries.
Retention of Hat & Hair entries
The New Zealand Hat and Hair Art Awards Incorporated reserve the right to retain hats for a period of 12 months following the awards. Entries may be used in activities that relate to the promotion of the NZ Hat & Hair Art Awards.
The New Zealand Hat and Hair Art Awards Incorporated reserve the right to have first option to purchase any entry for inclusion in The NZ Hat & Hair Art Awards Collection.
Upon payment of the acquisition prize money the NZ Hat and Hair Art Awards Inc. automatically retain ownership of the Supreme Award Hat Art winning entry and the Supreme Award Hair Art Winning entry.

General Term and Conditions
Conditions of Entry
All entries must be the designer’s original concept. Entries that have been accepted in any other competition in New Zealand or have appeared in any media will not be accepted. Entries from tertiary students who have exhibited hair art or hats as part of their curriculum may be eligible. Students need to apply to New Zealand Hat and Hair Art Awards Incorporated in the first instance.
Judging Notes
All entries will be judged both on and off the catwalk. Judging will take into account:
Artistic merit and visual impact.
Imaginative ideas and the originality of concept and design.
Creative ideas in the use, adaptation and manipulation of fabrics and materials.
Level of technical proficiency, workmanship and construction techniques.
The judges’ decision will be final; no correspondence will be entered into.
Show Tickets
Each entry fee entitles you to 1 complimentary ticket to the Gala Performance Awards Show and the After Show supper. Seating will be in the area designated for designers. An additional ticket for a friend will be available in this area at a special price of $37.00; After Show supper tickets $30.00. Pre-show Cocktail tickets @ $45.00 are available by request.
Please be aware tickets in the designated area are limited and sell out quickly, please book early to avoid disappointment.

From the date of acceptance of your entry, all copyright rights for your entry are the exclusive property of the New Zealand Hat and Hair Art Awards Incorporated. The New Zealand Hat and Hair Art Awards Incorporated may use, photograph, film, store, publish or otherwise display your entry or permit the entry to be used by others without compensation to the artist. By signing the entry form, the designer agrees to the terms of this release.
New Zealand Hat and Hair Art Awards Incorporated retain the rights to take photographs of hat and hair art entries and to publish these, with acknowledgement wherever possible, in publications that relate to NZ Hat & Hair Art Awards.
The New Zealand Hat and Hair Art Awards Incorporated reserves the right to all film, broadcasting, Internet and any related rights, which it may at its discretion, elect to use for publicity or any other purpose.
Insurance and Care
All reasonable care will be taken with entries, but no responsibility will be accepted for damage or loss, nor will the NZ Hat & Hair Art Awards Inc. meet any freight fees, insurance or any other costs. It is the designer’s responsibility to insure their property at all times.
